This is the first group of torchbearers chosen to carry the Olympic flame across the nation.

Starting on 19 May 8,000 will run a relay in an 8,000 mile relay ending up in the capital for the London 2012 Games. Each torchbearer has been chosen in recognition of their achievements and contribution to communities.

In December, 2011, a little ahead of the exciting event officials announced some and presented them in London.  The torchbearers came from different parts of the UK and were welcomed at the ceremony at Tower Bridge in London.

Excitement is mounting for the forthcoming Olympic Games.  Thousands around the country are eager to participate in carrying a torch or being a volunteer.

There is a great deal of interest nationwide as the year for the big Games gets closer. Preparations have begun in the Park building venues, sports centres and entertainment for the crowds.

Carrying a torch has been described as a honour.  Members of the public, personalities, celebrities and stars are hoping they will get a chance to run with the flame.
