Community Shop Instead of Flats
A community shop was saved when the people of the village of Gawsworth in Cheshire won a battle to take ownership of the local premises.
They fought to buy it when plans were being considered to convert it into flats. The campaign succeeded and volunteers now make sure the shop runs smoothly.
There was a well-fought argument for the site. The group had gathered all the necessary details to persuade the council that the area should not be turned into basic living buildings. They organised the purchase of products so shelves could filled with a variety of goods. The new owners also took on the role of selling newspapers
The community ‘take-over’ boosted the mood of residents in the area.
ynuk.tv took a look at the shop and the people running it.
