Political Olympics – London 2012

Political Olympics

Political Olympics.  It was claimed that the Olympics had a political view. A major issue with the neighbouring boroughs of London 2012. Hackney and Newham.

Officials believed the community left out of the great Olympic Games. Accused the Games authorities of not including locals when it came to recruiting personnel.  Foreign workers more likely to be employed.  Most from the EU.

The borough of Tower Hamlets was particularly concerned.  They were not convinced that pledges made by the Olympic committee would be fulfilled.  Surrounding boroughs, Hackney and Newham among the most deprived in Britain.

Local population promised jobs and a starring role. Now many may barely feel touched by the games. Rushanara Ali, Labour MP, wants the Olympics to be an open celebration for the whole city.  Not just for those who can afford or allocated tickets. But also an event that reaches out into communities and on to the streets

MP Ali questioned how many of the residents from the host boroughs had been employed at the Olympic site.  The response only 201 were held by residents from Tower Hamlets out of the 6,000 on site jobs created.  Hackney had 133.  Not a fair balance.  Re-think needed.  Did it work? Not for want of trying.
